Move Out and Follow
Joshua’s officer’s orders to the Israelites getting ready to cross the Jordan River: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.” Joshua 3:3-4
For God is present in the company of the righteous. Psalm 14:5b
The ark of the covenant symbolized God’s power, His presence, and His guidance. The Israelites were preparing to cross a raging river at flood stage in the springtime. They did not know the way, but Joshua, following God’s clear commands, ordered his officers to give explicit directions to the people. God is present. He goes before us. We’ve never been this way before. Keep your eyes on the priests carrying the ark. When they move out, you move out and follow!
In Joshua 3:9, Joshua told the people, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God!” Listen. Be attentive. Hear with total attention. God’s Presence is going before us and He is leading us in the way we are to go. Listen, hear, watch and see. You are on unfamiliar ground but if you watch, obey, and move out as directed, you will be safely delivered into the Promised Land. Why? Because God is present in the company of His righteous!
The people obeyed. And as soon as the priests carrying the ark stepped into the waters, the river instantly piled up in a heap, allowing the people to cross over on dry ground! Are you in need of God’s power, presence, guidance? Who isn’t? Are you trying to sort out the way in unfamiliar, uncharted territory? Keep your eyes on Jesus. He goes before us. He knows the way. When He moves out, follow! When He’s still, rest. Come in close. Nestle. Obey. God is present in the company of the righteous. Don’t feel righteous? I know. But indeed, as a fact, we do have the righteousness of God imputed to us. Believe. Trust. Move out from the fears and shadows into the Truth. See the waters pile up in a heap and the dry ground appear! Then walk in His way rejoicing!
