The history of the church is one of the pendulum swinging from cultural accommodation to religious isolationism. The Church in Corinth became just like their surroundings in a worldly city. Galatians, on the other hand, were ready to go back to a strict legalism. Monasticism through the ages have gone through repeated cycles of accommodation and isolation. We still do it today’s with our liberals and fundamentalists. But here, in a simple verse near the end of Colossians, Paul sets a different course.
