“What Can This Mean?”

They stood there amazed and perplexed.  ‘What can this mean?’ They asked each other? (Acts 2:12).

Onlookers are reacting with these sorts of questions to the phenomenon of ignorant Galileans suddenly speaking in their various foreign languages.  It was a manifestation of the work of the Holy Spirit.  But the onlookers didn’t know that.  They wanted to figure out what was going on, and so some of them asked questions and other thought they must be drunk.  `

Evangelism works best when the Holy Spirit is working through us, when the Spirit is drawing people to ask questions about what is going on when they see amazing things like acts of love and selflessness, and maybe even a miracle.  When the questions are asked, then the words come.  This time they came through Peter in the first sermon of the church - and maybe still the best.

He tells people about Jesus who suffered, died and was raised to new life - new life he offers.  The next question comes, “What should we do?” (2:37).

Peter replied, ‘Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (2:38)
