Yielded Hearts

from Lynda Lindsey

“Now then,” said Joshua, ‘throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”  Joshua 24:23

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and will all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:4-5

There is much in Scripture about our hearts. Hearts can be hard, circumcised or uncircumcised, deceitful, wicked, clean, new. Joshua tells the Israelites to toss the idols and foreign gods they had previously known, served, or observed pagan nations serving and to yield their hearts to the Lord God of Israel. To yield means to relinquish position or possession of something in favor of another thing. To give way to something or someone else, to submit.

Hard to do in any age. Yet it is imperative to submit, to yield our heart to God, for He is a jealous God. He will have no other gods before Him. He is holy. He is One. There is no other. Loving God and following hard after Him in obedience is an exclusionary proposition. We cannot add God into our already existing belief system. He refuses to be just one more idol we worship. He will be supreme in our life and heart and being or He will not be our Lord! Identify and forsake whatever is in competition with God and yield your heart to His. And in that place we find rest.
