Go in the Strength You Have

 from Lynda Lindsey

But may they who love You be like the sun when it rises in its strength. Judges 5:31b

The angel of the Lord’s greeting to Gideon: The Lord is with you, mighty warrior. Judges 6:12b

The Lord to Gideon: Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you? Judges 6:14

Sometimes we are asked to do great, mighty things. Sometimes we are simply called to do ordinary, everyday tasks faithfully and well. Consider Gideon, a man God used in extraordinary times to deliver the Israelites from an exceedingly oppressive enemy. Gideon was threshing wheat, a necessary but mundane task, in a winepress when God summoned him for a job of colossal proportions. Usually wheat was threshed on a hill so the chaff could blow away. But Gideon was working in a winepress trying to harvest his crop before being detected by the marauding Midianites. I doubt Gideon felt much like a mighty warrior! Yet, that is what the angel of the Lord calls Gideon.

Gideon questions, tarries, asks for signs, and makes excuses. He is from the weakest Israelite clan and the least in his immediate family. God’s swift response: The Lord God is with you, Gideon. I, God, have called you a mighty warrior. Go in the strength you have and save Israel. I, God, will be with you and you will strike down all the Midianites together.

Gideon was called to go in the strength he had, and he had little! Is our strength, like Gideon’s small? Meager? Insufficient? Indeed! But when God calls, He supplies. The great I AM is with us. Courage comes as we step out in halting baby steps, depending not on our puny faith, but on God and His faithful Word. Just as the sun gains strength as the day progresses, we who love the Lord gain strength as we advance on our God journey. Go...is He not sending you?
