Craving Peace and Joy? Be a Friend, Not an Enemy!

from Lynda Lindsey

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1-2

Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him! For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Romans 5:9-11

At the moment we believe by faith in Christ to save us from our sins, several exchanges take place. We are taken out of our old family (Adam) and placed into our new forever family (Jesus). Jesus took our sin upon Himself on the cross; in exchange, we are pardoned, forgiven, and made righteous in God’s sight. God’s Holy Spirit comes to live inside us, granting us power to live a life pleasing to Jesus and helping us grow into Jesus’ likeness.

We are now newly recreated in Christ Jesus. We rejoice in hope and thankfulness to God. The old has gone, the new has come! With this newness comes peace and joy: we who were once enemies of God and alienated from God, are included in God’s family. God calls us sons and daughters. Jesus, our Lord and Savior, is our brother.

Will our new life in Christ be trouble free? By no means! We will endure trials, suffering, perhaps even persecution. We will experience all the maladies that occur in a fallen world. But even then we can rejoice in hope: life on this earth is not all there is. Jesus will return one glorious future day. Focus on God and His goodness. Be attuned to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and leading. Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. Wait hopefully. He is coming again to set all things right!
