I lift up my eyes to the hills—-where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2
You (God) have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. Isaiah 25:4(a)
My God, My Help. The Lord. Creator. Maker of heaven and earth. Protector. Guardian. Refuge. Shelter. Our stay. God watches over all His creation, day and night, neither slumbering nor sleeping. He who made us, who formed us from the dust of the earth, is ever vigilant, ever observant towards us. Unlike God, sometimes we watch an event unfold without true comprehension of what really happened…but God’s eyes see and comprehend!
The old English word, to watch, has the meaning of observing, guarding, and keeping one’s charge safe and protected at all times, but especially during the night, a time when the enemy can stealthily attack. How gracious of God, the God of Light, to shed His light on our path in daylight or in darkness! God, our Help, within us and beside us!
Nothing can derail us from the good purposes of God. Neither the enemy’s taunts, the burning rays of the desert sun, or the loose stones along our path. God is aware. Awake. He cares. He sees our comings and goings. His power can keep us in this present age and in the age to come.
He who is watchful and forgiving is also just. He cares for all His creation. He sees the poor. The needy. The downtrodden. The ones who cannot speak for themselves. God also sees our responses to our brother’s and sister’s poverty and need. We live in this present age as God’s stewards; our responsibility as a steward is great. Current events unfold around us, but often we don’t comprehend what really is happening. But God’s eyes see and comprehend. God watches over us. Are we doing the same for the poor and needy?
