Not Hide and Seek but Seek and Find

 from Lynda Lindsey

I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. Proverbs 8:19

For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord. Proverbs 8:35

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12

Jesus said to him (Zacchaeus), “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” Luke 19:9-10

Remember playing the Hide and Seek game when you were a child? One child covers his eyes and counts slowly while another hides. Then the call rings out, “Here I come, ready or not!” And the madcap chase is on to discover the friend’s hiding place. Scripture abounds with counsel to find the Lord God, the source of all wisdom, salvation, mercy, favor, and grace. But there’s a major twist between seeking and finding God and playing the Hide and Seek game. God does not hide from us; God desires to be found!

We have God’s assurance that if we seek Him we will find Him. Jesus’ missional statement declares that the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost! What Good News indeed! God Himself has taken the initiative! He comes to us, to our house, seeking to save us from our lostness. Our sinfulness. Our aloneness. There’s a hunger inside us that only God can satisfy. Unfortunately we often gorge ourselves on too much cheap candy before satisfying our hunger at God’s lavish banqueting table.

Sin has separated us from God’s presence; yet God yearns after His wayward children. God loves us with an everlasting love. He makes Himself irresistible to us. He pursues us. And when we seek Him, He allows us to find Him. God generously bestows on us all that He is and all that He has. Then we realize that we have all we need for life and health, for peace and joy. Seek and find! Trade the cheap candy for God’s abundant banqueting table, for it is in Christ alone that your hunger will be assuaged!
