Title: Learning vs. Living
Text: Matthew 28:20a; 1 John 2:1-6
Thought for the Day:
The Great Commission says that we should teach. Teach what? Learn what? Often even seasoned Christians respond by saying that we are to teach and learn all that Jesus has commanded. That makes sense and even sounds correct, but that is not what the Great Commission is saying. We are told in this commandment to teach disciples how to observe or obeyall that Jesus commanded. Knowledge and obedience are two very different things. It’s not enough to learn the commandments; rather, we are to live them.
1 John 2:1-6 gives us a glimpse of what it means to obey, to live the commandments of Jesus Christ. Keeping, or obeying, His commandments is an indication that we are truly following Him, following the path that He walked. In this obedience, says 1 John 2, the love of God is perfected and is an indication that we are living inHim, meaning that we are walking His walk in a right relationship with Him. The priority of the Great Commission is to go beyond learning into living all that Jesus commanded.
Pray through this Thought for the Day as the Spirit leads you in your heart and in your mind. Amen
