The Whole Duty of Man?

Fear God and Keep His Commandments

Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 12:13(b)

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come... Ecclesiastes 12:1(a)

Remember Him (Creator)—-before the silver cord is severed, or the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, or the wheel broken at the well, and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:6-7

Solomon, superlatively rich in worldly goods, spent most of his life pursuing everything under the sun in a selfish, hedonistic search for the meaning of life. Solomon concluded that life, apart from God, is meaningless, and that man exists for the sole purpose of fearing God and keeping His commandments. Solomon’s purpose in Ecclesiastes is to lead people to seek true happiness in God alone. We are spared a lifetime of meaninglessness, of chasing after the wind, if we love God wholeheartedly, use our time well and build our lives on the solid foundation of God.

Because God has set eternity in our hearts, nothing can satisfy us till we drink from the wellspring of living water. God bestows life as a gift; His gifts allows us to enjoy life. God enlarges our hearts with gladness and contentment as we become more and more occupied with loving God. The simple, everyday pleasures of food and drink, family and friends, and work made honorable because it is done as an act of obedience to God, all bring true enjoyment.

Be wise. Take Solomon’s advice. Choose God. Keep God in first place. Life is filled with both opportunity and risk; honor God by living careful, obedient, circumspect lives. Life is fragile. No one knows the hour our soul will be required of us. So well before God! Rejoice daily. Seek to rectify injustice, yet live confidently, expectantly. God will come again. He will set all wrongs right. Focus on eternity. Be occupied with gladness of heart. The whole duty of man? Fear God and keep His commandments! It’s the only risk worth taking!
