Justice Rolling Like a River

From Lynda Lindsey

But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! Amos 5:24

“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine through the land—-not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord. Men will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it.”

Amos 8:11-12

“Surely the eyes of the Sovereign Lord are on the sinful kingdom. I will destroy it from the face of the earth—-yet I will not totally destroy the house of Jacob,” Amos 9:8

Complacency. Injustice. Depravity. Excessive luxury gained by exploitation and oppression. People had become so apostate, so disinterested in God that they no longer felt hunger or desire to live according to God’s precepts. Thus God promised a spiritual famine; there would simply be no opportunity to hear from God. No prophets, no spiritual advisors, no faithful teachers. Famine, scarcity, shortage, not of food, but of life found in Jehovah God. A bleak time, men staggering and wandering, searching for, but not finding, God’s word. God’s justice and righteousness, which the Israelites had thwarted, would roll down unobstructed in a never-failing stream.

God promised destruction, but not total destruction. David’s mighty house would be reduced to a fallen tent, yet one of David’s descendants would be forever enthroned! Messiah, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Righteous and Just, would burst on the scene to end the silence and bridge the gap between sinful man and holy God. Miraculously, the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, modeling for us life as God meant for us to live, abundant and full. Jesus so salted His teachings that we are left hungering and thirsting for more of the Living Word.

Jesus, now presiding in heaven, will return once again; what a time that will be! Abundant harvests. New wine flowing. Gardens ripe with fruit. Life with Jesus forever and ever. No scarcity. No lack. Life full to overflowing. Our thirst slaked at the fountain of living water. Look forward to that time. Get ready and stay ready. Be prepared. Seek the Lord while He may be found. Ferret out, confess and forsake sin. Repent. Relish and obey God’s Word. Be salt and light in a dark world. Be on the side of justice and righteousness, for God’s justice will roll on like a river, a never-failing stream! Hallelujah!
