Eyes, Ears, Hearts

From Lynda Lindsey

Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear. ... But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts; They have turned aside and gone away. Jeremiah 5:21; 23

To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to Me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it. Jeremiah 6:10

But they did not listen or pay attention; instead they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.

Jeremiah 7:24

God, whose eyes look for truth, issued a challenge. Go up and down Jerusalem’s streets, carefully searching for just one person who deals honestly and seeks truth; if such a person could be found, God would forgive His people. What was found in the search? Total corruption, depravity, utter unfaithfulness, unashamed rebellion. Hardened hearts, ears and eyes closed to God. All the people, from highest to lowest, were so skilled in doing evil that they found no pleasure in God. Even God’s word was offensive to them.

Our senses help us survive. Through our senses we receive and process information allowing us to react, communicate, and keep ourselves healthy and safe. God’s people had become senseless; foolishly they turned aside from God and trusted in all that was false. They were spiritually blind and deaf. By following their stubborn, evil inclinations they went backward, not forward.. Hard, cold hearts. Deaf ears. Blind eyes. Refusing repentance. Swearing loyalty to pagan idols. Forsaking all they once held dear, the people opened wide the door to God’s discipline. The marauding Babylonian army, already at the door, would swarm in, devouring and destroying everything in which the people had foolishly trusted.

God-followers are called to holiness. Purity. Righteousness. Truth. Justice. We are called to worship and obey God, not in an outward, showy way, but as people marked by change and transformation from our inner being or core. We are given new, soft, pliable hearts, hearts that understand spiritual truths revealed by the Holy Spirit. Our eyes and ears are meant to see, hear, and obey God’s very words, to follow His light and act with His wisdom. Acuity is a sharpness or keenness of thought, vision, or hearing; and spiritual acuity is our call as believers in Christ! How’s your spiritual acuity? Are you seeing with spiritual clarity; hearing with spiritual sharpness? Don’t settle for less!
