Deliverance

from Lynda Lindsey

During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel—-and God knew. Exodus 2:23-25

Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey…” Exodus 3:7-8 (a)

“And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.” Exodus 3:9

Israel, in Egypt, had multiplied greatly and grown exceedingly strong. A ruthless king of Egypt ascended to power, one who never knew Joseph nor Joseph’s God; fearing a takeover by the Hebrews, the king ordered harsh, unjust treatment against them. Yet the more oppressed they were, the more the Hebrews multiplied; finally the king ordered the Hebrew midwives to kill all male babies at birth. The midwives, in obedience to God, whom they feared, did not comply, which led to the king’s order to drown all the Hebrew male babies in the Nile.

The Hebrews, once welcomed as invited guests in Egypt, were now enslaved, laboring under cruel taskmasters. Groaning in misery, they cried out to God for rescue from slavery and suffering. God’s response? God heard, saw—-and knew. He remembered His covenant promises. He saw His people’s affliction and suffering. And God acted.  He came down to deliver His people up out of the hand of the Egyptians into a good and broad land, the Promised Land.

A deliverer, one who rescues and saves someone from harm or danger, frees people from misery or bondage. The midwives were agents of deliverance for the Hebrew baby boys. But God, our strong Deliverer, is the only Way of rescue for all humankind. Messiah, Jesus, Lord and King rescues and delivers us from sin, death, judgment. God saw the people—-and God knew. God knew because He chose to come down to us, live among us, suffer for us, die for us, and rise again for us. Son of God and son of Man, identifies with our groaning. Have you experienced His gracious deliverance?
