Clothed and in His Right Mind

from Lynda Lindsey

The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. Mark 5:14-15

As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged Him that he might be with Him. And He did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to you friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. Mark 5:18-20

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (sound mind) II Timothy 1:7

Jesus healed a man tormented by a legion of unclean spirits.  When the unclean spirits came out of the man, they entered into a large herd of pigs who subsequently drowned in a headlong rush down a steep bank into the sea. The man’s torment was widely known, so people’s astonishment was great when they observed the man fully clothed, in his right mind, sitting at Jesus’ feet. Before we meet Christ, we too are living in a dark tomb-like place, trying every distraction and diversion the world offers, attempting to assuage our pain.

Encounters with Jesus are still memorable and transforming; not only are others astonished, we too are amazed at the difference between our before and after. As new creations in Christ, the old has passed away. We not only have new priorities and values, we have a new mind, the mind of Christ. We put off the old ways of thinking and behaving and set our minds on things above, on things important in God’s kingdom. We renew our mind daily, learning to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ; as we laser-focus on Jesus, we become more like Him. We learn to trust Jesus with all our anxieties and fears and experience His peace. We are clothed and in our right mind.

Of course the healed man wanted to travel with Jesus! But Jesus had an even bigger vision for the man than did the man himself. Jesus’ instructions? Go home; declare to friends and family the great mercy of the Lord and all His mighty deeds on your behalf. The healed man obeyed Jesus’ words and everyone who heard marveled. Want to have a mission, a ministry? Recount to others the ways the Lord has been merciful to you; tell of all the mighty deeds the Lord has done in your life. Describe your life before you were introduced to Jesus and the life you now live. Both you and your listeners will marvel!
