Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. Hebrews 11:1-2
By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. Hebrews 11:4
And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him. Hebrews 11:6
Who doesn’t like to receive public commendation, to be singled out, praised and rewarded for one’s behavior? Imagine being publicly acclaimed by God, receiving His testimony of praise, because of our faith! Without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith, a persistent hope, trust, and assurance in God, whom we cannot see, regarding events we cannot see, foresee, or even understand, pleases God. God rewarded and commended the faithful saints of ages past; God is no different today. God commends and rewards His faithful followers who both believe that He exists and who seek Him.
Faith enables us to set out, not knowing where we are going, trusting God to lead us in His good paths. Faith enables us to endure earthly trials as we wait patiently for heavenly rewards. Faith enables us to live, and even die, believing God’s promises are certain and sure, even if we don’t receive the promises in our lifetime. Faith empowers us to construct and build up God’s household in this present age while looking forward to our future, heavenly dwelling. Faith allows the unclean to be cleansed by Jesus’ blood and walk in newness of life.
Want to please God, to receive His commendation? In faith, draw near to Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Draw near with confidence. Come in close. Jesus, our sin offering, opens for us the way of forgiveness and eternal life. Jesus became one of us, yet without sin, to show us the way. Because Jesus suffered, endured temptation, faced public ridicule, was misunderstood and falsely accused, He deals gently with us in our sufferings. Hold fast to Him. Trust Him. Draw near with faith. Not only will you please God, you will receive His commendation and His righteousness! Walk by faith.
